Sparks from outlet - 2/28/2010 8:25:22 AM

I have an outlet that has been shooting sparks when I plug in my coffee maker. I am afraid it is going to start a fire. What do you think is causing it and how can I fix it?

We recently had a similar problem. It wasn't the wall plug. It was the vacuum plug itself. One of the wires was not making good contact.

could be several things. the most probable would be the outlet has a short so replace it. depends on how old your house is and what type of wiring you have, if it's not a real old house, probably just the outlet. If the coffee maker is in the kitchen, it should have a gfi circuit, if it doesn't, then an electrician might tell you you're not to code so they will have to redo a gfi circuit for you. law requires gfi (ground fault interupter) in all areas around water....bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor outlets are usually GFI. These gfi breakers will trip the breakers if water is detected so if someone drops an electrical applicance into the tub lets say...it should cut the power before you get fried.
