Torx screwdrivers are similar to flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers but the Torx driver uses a six-pointed star-shaped head that prevents it from cam out whereas the slotted/Phillips screwdriver faces the problem of cam-out frequently.

Using a Torx screwdriver to tighten/loosen a screw is not rocket science. A little bit of strength and a few moments are enough to complete the task.

4 Steps to Remove a Screw with a Torx Screwdriver

Step 1: Identify the Screw

There are different types of screwdrivers available in the market because there are different types of screws. You cannot use a single driver to loosen or tighten every type of screw. So, you need to identify the type of the screw so that you can determine the type of screwdriver.

The Torx screw looks like a six-pointed star. So, it is often called star screw. If the screw is a star screw then you can use the Torx screwdriver to loosen or tighten it.

Step 2: Fit the Tip of the Screwdriver inside the Screwhead

Place the tip of the screwdriver inside the head of the screw. Check that the driver is locked well in the respective place. Then go to the next step.

Step 3: Apply Pressure and Turn the Driver

Decide what you want to do – loosening or tightening the screw. If you want to tighten the screw hold on the handle, press down firmly, and turn it right. On the other hand, if you want to tighten the screw hold on the handle, press down firmly, and turn it left.

So, to tighten the screw you have to turn the driver clockwise and to loosen the screw you have to turn the driver anti-clockwise.

Step 4: Secure/ Remove the Screw

If you want to secure the screw keep turning it to the right until it feels too hard to tighten. On the other hand, if you want to remove the screw keep turning it to the right until it becomes so loose that you can remove it easily.

Final Word

The Torx screwdrivers are available in different sizes. Their sizes are identified by a letter and a number. For example – a Torx screwdriver can be of size T15 or T25. The higher the number the bigger the distance between the opposite points on the six-point screw head. You should be aware of the size of the screws while purchasing a Torx screwdriver. If the size does not match you cannot use the tool.
